🎢 Avatar, earthquakes, digital IDs, and food waste.

August 15 in the Valley.

In 2026, a new wildlife crossing will allow animals to safely cross the 101.

Welcome to your weekly Valley update! Today is Thursday, August 15, 2024.

In today’s NoHo Nick:

  • 🎢 A new Disney ride

  • ⛰️ Earthquakes

  • 🏖️ Dustin Hoffman saves a beach

  • 🍔 Smash burgers

  • 🎾 Free pickleball

Do you have an earthquake emergency kit?

I don’t. Less than 50% of people do.

But after this week’s earthquake and our ongoing summer of earthquakes, I’m getting one.

You should have enough supplies for 72 hours just in case essential services go down.

You can buy a starter kit for $35 on Amazon (not an affiliate link). Or, build your own:

  • 🚰 Water: Every person needs 1 gallon per day for 3 days. Polar seltzers don’t count.

  • 🥫 Food: A stash of non-perishable food—cans, protein bars, and dried food. And Trader Joe’s elote chips.

  • 📱 Cell Phone: Plus, an extra charger and battery backup. Download offline maps and House of the Dragon.

  • 🆘 Whistle: To call for help. You can use the one from your Ted Lasso Halloween costume.

  • ⛑️ First Aid: Band-aids, alcohol wipes, antibiotic ointment.

  • 🚽 Hygiene: Wipes, garbage bags, and zip ties to throw away your waste if plumbing fails…Yep.

  • 💊 Medicine: Prescriptions, eyeglasses, vitamins.

  • 👶 Baby: Formula, diapers, wipes.

  • 📄 Documents: Driver’s license, birth certificate, and insurance papers. Step one, find them.

  • 🛠️ Tools: Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities. Just like Bob the Builder.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

🎉 Birthday Shout-outs

August 17: “Happy 31st Caitlin! Your sister and mom love you. And we’re so proud of you.” - Jennifer K. (Studio City)

August 20: “Happy birthday, Gregg. Congrats on your new condo! We will definitely be using the pool…” - Luke (Encino)

♻️ Help reduce food waste. Pick up uneaten food and meals before they get thrown away.

Save good food from going to waste.

LA restaurants, grocery stores, and food outlets offer discounts if you pick up their prepared food, pastries, and unwanted groceries at the end of the day.

e.g. I got 3 pastries for the price of 1 at La Rochelle Bakery through the app.
