Here’s what’s happening this week:

LA News

📚 Read banned books at LAX. Soon, travelers can access the LA Library’s digital collection at LAX: bestsellers and banned books. The initiative champions the freedom to read and opposes censorship. (LA Times) You can still stop at Hudson Booksellers for mints and a magazine.

🍴 Run a “mini restaurant” from home starting November 1. The new program permits residents to serve meals from their private kitchens. Apply for a permit, meet safety requirements, and agree to sell no more than 30 meals daily. This initiative empowers entrepreneurial residents, especially women, and immigrants. (Patch) I’m excited about all the new Yelp reviews.

🚔 License plate cameras are coming to the Valley. A new program will install 100 automated license plate readers in Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, and Northridge. Officials say the cameras will help police track down stolen cars and suspects. Critics, including the ACLU, are concerned about potential data misuse. (KTLA)

🎟️ LA voting begins soon. Learn what’s on the ballot in November’s elections. Learn about new measures and where candidates stand. Rent control, new taxes, school board elections, and the minimum wage are on the ballot. October 21 is the last day to register to vote online. (LAist) Oh, it’s also the presidential election, too.

🏢 New penalties for bad landlords. Rental homes in Unincorporated LA County (San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita, etc.) will be routinely inspected for health and safety violations. The City of LA has been doing this for years. Check your renter rights. (LAist) No, the tiles aren’t supposed to be that color.

Food and Drinks

🍷 Hidden Wine Library (Pasadena). Looking for a secret adventure? Step through a hidden entrance into an intimate underground wine library in Old Pasadena. Rustic vibe. Extensive wine selection. Live piano music. The Cellar is perfect for a cozy date night or evening with friends.

🎷 Anderson .Paak Supper Club (West Hollywood). Step back to the 1970s at Andy’s, a new jazz and R&B supper club by singer Anderson .Paak. A vintage recording studio vibe and a menu crafted by chef Chris Oh. Bites like Korean BBQ spare ribs and Tokyo-fried chicken. Creative cocktails and live performances, including house bands and surprise guests. Wednesday to Sunday, 5 PM - 2 AM

🍔 SpongeBob Krabby Patties (Around LA). Celebrating the 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, 20 local restaurants are serving up their spin on the classic Krabby Patty. Wendy’s in Panorama City offers a quarter-pound beef burger with a secret sauce, fries, and a Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty. Until October 27.

Things to Do

🔭 Griffith Park Star Party: Keep your eyes on the sky for some celestial highlights in October. A much-anticipated comet will be visible in the west on October 10, 11, and 12. 🍁 Sherman Oaks Fall Festival (Van Nuys): Fall festival with food trucks, a kids’ area, pumpkin painting, bracelet making, and more. Live music includes Blank Space (Taylor Swift Tribute) and Locked Out of Heaven (Bruno Mars Tribute). Free. Sunday, October 13 from 3 PM to 7:30 PM.

🎃 Dog Halloween Trivia (North Hollywood): Ready for a spooky trivia night with your pup? Fluffology Dog Spa is hosting trivia with an open bar, pizza, prizes, and a dog costume contest. Bring your furry friend for a chance to win amazing dog-friendly prizes. $20. Tuesday, October 29.

💀 Día de los Muertos Celebration (San Fernando): Join the community in honoring loved ones with a beautiful altar at Recreation Park. Reserve an altar space by calling 818-898-1290 or visiting the city’s website. Free. Saturday, October 26 at 11 AM.

📔 Poetry Collection Debut (Studio City): Celebrate Avery Greenburg’s debut poetry collection at Annabelle’s Book Club, an independent SFV bookstore. In-person poetry reading and book signing. Shop other local poetry favorites, too. Free. Sunday, October 13 at 1 PM.

🍹 Singles Only Social Club (Santa Monica): Private party ideal for singles aged 25-45. Open bar and plenty of mingling. Monthly meetups in LA and NYC. Meet new people and maybe even find your soup snake. Limited tickets to maintain a “good ratio.” $45. Thursday, October 17 at 7 PM.

🐾 Beloved Pets Offering (Los Angeles Zoo): Honor your pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the LA Zoo. The altar, adorned with marigolds and personal mementos, lets you pay tribute to your furry (and non-furry) friends. Print photos, create art, and decorate frames.
