Here’s what’s happening this week:
🏄 Malibu is getting a $4M skate park. Construction begins next month. Designed with community input, the 12,500-square-foot park will feature stairs, rails, ledges, quarter pipes, and more. Expected to open in Fall 2025. (NBC)
📱 MyLA311 upgrades. On March 28, an improved MyLA311 system with a more user-friendly interface, better mapping, and real-time service updates will be available. Download the new mobile app starting this weekend. (City of LA)
🏙️ L.A. faces $1B budget deficit. Los Angeles is bracing for a nearly $1 billion budget shortfall next year. Cuts to services and layoffs seem likely. Wildfires, infrastructure repair, shifting federal priorities, and stagnant tax revenues are all contributing factors. (NY Times)
✈️ Residents propose a Van Nuys Airport soundproof wall. Frustrated residents near Van Nuys Airport are funding a noise-absorbing wall along Hayvenhurst Avenue. Two airport business tenants have also pledged up to $2.5M for the project in exchange for lease extensions. City officials are delaying the project for environmental reviews. Residents say jet fumes and noise affect their homes. (Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council)


🔪 Knife Sharpening (Burbank): Every Thursday at Handy Market, you can get your knives professionally sharpened in about an hour for $10 per knife. Steven Sharpens also offers free repairs for chips, broken tips, and protruding bolsters.
🎰 Women’s Pinball Tournament (Eagle Rock): Walt’s Bar hosts a monthly competition for women and non-binary players. $5 buy-in. Cash prizes. Every second Monday at 8 PM.
🎶 Indie Concert (Northridge): Catch Nikolas Ramos, The Lineup, and Physical Education performing live under the stars at Aspire Apartments' rooftop. Hosted by Nomad, a music collective. Limited to 40 people. $12.50. Friday, March 21. Doors open at 6:30 PM, show starts at 7 PM.
🕹️ Be Kind, Rewind 90s Party (Studio City): Throw it back with 90s hit songs, Nintendo 64 battles, and classic board games at Jax’s Bar on the last Friday of every month. 21+. Free. Friday, March 28, from 8 PM to midnight.
🐶 Frenchie Meet-Up (San Fernando): You’ve probably seen the posters around the SFV for a missing dog, Mushie. Join a dog-friendly gathering at Hansen Dam Rec Area to support the search for Mushie, a pup who has been missing for six months: free dog photos, treats, and a chance to win a $100 pet store gift card. Raise awareness for Mushie! Saturday, March 22, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Free.
🌶️ Vegan Chili Cook-Off (Burbank): Tony’s Darts Away hosts a plant-based chili showdown at IATSE Local 33. Tickets include five chilis and a vote in the People’s Choice Award. Craft beer is available, too. $23. Saturday, March 22 at 1 PM.
🌙 Two Rooms Girls’ Night (Chinatown): Unique concert venue series of local music. A night of music, friendship, and creativity with a clothing swap, skillshare, and bracelet-making at Studious Coworking. $20. Monday, March 24 at 7 PM.
📸 Santa Monica Photowalk (Santa Monica): Join East LA Film Shop for a relaxed photo walk at Santa Monica Pier. Take photos with other photographers and see Santa Monica through a new lens. Stick around after for food and drinks. Free. Saturday, March 29 at 11:30 AM.
🎭 Bob Baker Day (LA State Historic Park): Celebrate puppetry and community at this free annual festival featuring marionette shows, art activities, and performances. Free. Sunday, April 13, from 10 AM to 5 PM.
🎩 Magic Castle Live Magic Show (Downtown LA): World-class illusionists on stage at The United Theater. An exclusive invite to Hollywood’s private Magic Castle. Generally restricted to the public! Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4.

🧇 Waffles + Boba (Van Nuys): Need treats for your Severance watch party? Mr. Milchick’s favorite spot is Bobarita, a boba shop that sells croissant waffles, shakes, sweet red bean pastries (taiyaki), and boba.
🌮 Taco Madness Contest. L.A.'s fiercest taco tournament is back for its 16th year, featuring 64 taquerías from L.A., the Valley, Inland Empire, Long Beach, and Orange County. Voting starts on March 26, leading to the live taco festival on May 2 at Plaza de Cultura y Artes. Legends and fresh contenders will battle for taco glory.
🍺 LA Beer Fest (Downtown LA): Sample unlimited pours from 80+ breweries, enjoy food trucks, and dance to live music at LA's biggest beer festival. 21+. $55. Saturday, April 5.
☕🍷 Coffee + Wine Bar (Coming Soon—Burbank): Flow, a new café and wine bar, is coming to the First Street Apartments. It will offer coffee by day and boutique wines by night. It will open in the Summer of 2025 at 325 N. First Street.
