Welcome to your weekly Valley update! Today is Thursday, January 9, 2025.

In this week’s NoHo Nick:

  • 🧑‍🚒 Fires

I hope you’re safe, healthy, and prepared as fires impact our communities.

I’m writing this email at 11:40 PM on Wednesday night.

Many businesses, events, restaurants, and places I planned to feature this week are closed.

Below, I’m sharing resources to help you navigate these disasters—the most destructive fires in LA history.

As we regroup and rebuild in the coming weeks and months, I’ll spotlight businesses and groups that need support.

In the meantime, take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Key Resources

  • 🔥 Fire Tracker: Track fires in real-time with Watch Duty and Cal Fire.

  • ❤️ Mutual Aid LA: This is a robust list of free community resources for navigating the fires and aftermath. It includes housing, pet shelters, recovery networks, and more.

  • 🚗 Road Closures and Evacuations: Find safe routes out of town from LA County Government.

  • 🪪 Replace Documents: Learn from Senator Alex Padilla how to replace your driver’s license, Green card, and Medicare card and get aid after a disaster.

  • 🏡 Free Airbnbs: Have you been evacuated? Get temporary housing courtesy of Airbnb.

  • 🥪 Free Food: These restaurants are offering free coffee, food, WiFi, and drinks.

  • 🏢 Emergency Shelter: The Dream Center is an East-LA charitable organization offering emergency shelter. It allows pets.

  • 🌳 Park closures: Most LA parks and recreation centers are closed.

  • 🧠 Here’s another big list of news and free help.

How to Help

  • Donate: The California Fire Relief provides N-95 masks, medicine, and resources to healthcare agencies and first responders in areas affected by wildfires.

  • Donate: Friends in Deed is a nonprofit that provides services for the homeless. It opened its Bad Weather Shelter amid the fires.

  • Volunteer: Red Cross LA

  • Animal Foster: Many cats and dogs were displaced by the fires. You can offer temporary foster care at the Canine Rescue Club.

These are the outlets I’m following for live updates:

Some lighthearted news.

🚆 This guy does mountain bike tricks and flips on a moving freight train.

Trivia

❓️ What year was the Los Angeles Fire Department founded?

Hint: It was before you were born.

Last week’s question: This San Fernando Valley neighborhood was called “Lankershim" in 1896 and renamed to its current name in 1927. What neighborhood is it?

Thanks for reading, and see you next week!
